Meat Eating

Mary sent me a good article about meat consumption.

  1. Reducing our meat consumption for environmental reasons is laudable.

So is reducing our dependency on foreign oil and (inefficient) automobiles.

Unfortunately, both objectives meet the same dead-end:

Rising prices won't really stop those who can afford it from eating so much steak and driving so much Land Rover.

If only excessive consumption were to become as unfashionable as crimped hair and tight-rolled jeans.

  2. I have to agree about reducing our meat consumption is good, but for health reasons, as well as environmental ones. Moderation is the key, as it is for most of our diet, except perhaps for human remains or radioactive waste. Those may be consumed aplenty.

Anyway, my point is that I am a proud meat-eater but I am definitely for healthier raising and feeding of livestock, and for voluntarily restricting our consumption to somehting along the lines of the amounts listed in the NY Times article.
