Just out of curiosity, I am interested in your opinions (or statistical backup) on to what the Democratic candidates owe their supposed sure-fire victory this November.
Is it merely dissatisfaction with Iraq and the economy combined with identity politics and hype surrounding the first realistic female and black contenders?
Or does anyone want to make the case that the election of either of those two is proof of the beginning of a shift to the left among certain groups, potentially as blowback from "mistakes made" with Bush?
I'm not trying to prove a point (I haven't one), I am interested in a back-home perspective, and Lord knows I can't ask my parents.

Judging by the outpouring of opinions and responses it may be a little premature to answer these questions. You may recall that several weeks ago I remained far more pessimistic about Democratic prospects for the general election.
ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt that dissatisfaction with Iraq and the economy have widened the door of opportunity for Dems to retake the White House, but I greatly fear that moderate and undecided voters will largely attach these failures to George Bush rather than his party and Johnny McFingers. The experience angle still plays very well with many key voters and this will be a boon to McWink even if age may be against him.
In Philadelphia I am right in the midst of a great deal of enthusiasm for Obama...and to a lesser extent Clinton. I would love to believe this was part of a major social and political shift, but I really don't see that at this point. I do acknowledge that despite his being not nearly as cool as we would want, O'bama (perhaps as a result of his Irish immigrant background) has the charisma and power to draw people who are otherwise disinterested and/or disenfranchised into the mix.
Aha - Here is a strong indication that Repubs and moderates may be turning away from the GOP out of dissatisfaction. Obama will find Osama! (smerconish has a popular morning radio show in philadelphia)
